We offer the following Dutch courses and lessons: Basic Dutch, Intermediate Dutch, Advanced Dutch, & Dutch Conversation course, and Private Dutch Lessons. More information about registration and assessment can be found here.

Basic Dutch course

Learn to have small talks in Dutch. Basic Dutch consists of three courses of 10 lessons each. After completing Basic Dutch 1, 2 and 3, you can continue with the Intermediate Dutch course.


Instructions during the course will be given in Dutch and English. Sufficient knowledge of is English is required.

Main objective

The main objective of the Basic Dutch course is to learn to communicate in Dutch with the basics and have small talks. All skills are developed: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. To this end, attention is given to such matters as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Reading and writing skills are mostly practiced in the time allotted for self-study.

You will be able to recognize, understand, and express learned words and basic sentences related to subjects and environments you have studied. For example, you can write short and simple postcards and letters, and fill in forms with personals details. Or order food and drinks at a restaurant.

Basic Dutch 1 is for you if you didn't take prior Dutch courses, nor have other experience with the Dutch language. During the course you complete chapters 1 to 5 in Contact! nieuw 1.

Basic Dutch 2 is for you if you have finished Basic Dutch 1 or have already have acquired basic knowledge of Dutch. You complete chapters 6 to 10 in Contact! nieuw 1.

Basic Dutch 3 is for you if you have finished Basic Dutch 1 and 2 or have acquired reasonable knowledge of Dutch. During the course you complete chapters 11 to 15 in Contact! nieuw 1. After completing Basic Dutch 3 you have reached level A1 according to the CEFR framework and you can progress to the Intermediate Dutch course.

Practical information

Winter trimester: Starts in week 3 (January 16 onwards).

Classes on: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evenings, from 7 pm until 8:30 pm PST. For more information about the schedule, click here.

Number of lessons: Basic Dutch consists of three courses. It consists of Basic Dutch 1, 2, and 3. Each course consists of 10 lessons so in total there are 30 lessons to finish the Basic Dutch course. 

Duration of each lesson: 1.5 hours.

Number of students: Minimum 3 students before a class starts. Maximum 5 students per class.

Language during the course: Dutch and English.

Location: Zoom video.

Teaching method

The accredited teaching method we use is Contact! nieuw 1. It is developed by Radboud in’to Languages, the center of expertise for language and communication of Radboud University Nijmegen.

  • Basic Dutch 1 course: $300
  • Basic Dutch 2 course: $300
  • Basic Dutch 3 course: $300

Included in the tuition of one course:

  • 10 Weekly online lessons taught by a Dutch tutor.
  • Availability of the tutor during the week, for questions.
  • Additional learning materials besides Contact! nieuw.
  • Lessons will be recorded for reviewing at a later time.

Excluded in the tuition of one course:

Contact! nieuw 1 text- and workbook. The license for the digital version is approximately €43.00 or $50.00. You may purchase a paper & digital version of Contact! nieuw 1 but it costs more due to the material and shipping costs.

Registration & assessment

After registration and before the start of the course you will be contacted to assess your current level of Dutch and for final placement. You can only start a Dutch course (except with the Dutch Conversation course) after the intake-assessment and placement. After placement, you will be provided order information for Contact! nieuw, and you will receive tuition payment information.

In short, to start a Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Dutch course there are five successive steps:

  1. Register for a Dutch course.
  2. Have an intake-assessment by phone to asses your current level of Dutch and to map out your learning wishes and look at which course fits your needs best. The assessor will explain their advice and you will get more information about the contents and procedure of the course.
  3. Final placement in a Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced Dutch course (as a minimum of 3 students is required to start a course).
  4. Order a Contact! nieuw 1, 2, or 3 text- and workbook.
  5. Pay the tuition fee.
